Professor Duncan Bentley

Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor and President

As Victoria’s premier regional university, we have been educating Australia’s future leaders, innovators and thinkers for 150 years.

We have been here for our communities through wars, disasters and times of strong economic growth. We provide the learning, innovation and research they need to survive and succeed.

Today is no different. We are resilient and ready to shape the future. Join us on the journey!

You’ll be part of a 20,000 strong network of Federation students, across Australia and the world, ready to thrive in a digital post-COVID world.

Our purpose is to transform lives and enhance communities. A qualification from Federation University or Federation TAFE does just that.

We support our students to succeed and prepare them for the future. We are rated the number one university in Victoria for full-time employment and for the way we support our students, develop their skills and for the exceptional quality of our teachers.

Federation drives regional economic growth and builds our communities. We work with you to make learning something you can do, whoever you are and wherever you are on your lifelong learning journey. We help you develop the skills you need to follow your passion.

Our graduates thrive, because Federation is deeply engaged with industries and employers. We have the largest regional Technology Park of any university in Australia, giving our students access to invaluable workplace experience in global organisations.

This all ensures that our internationally-connected research collaborations are focused on solving real-world problems and making a difference in people’s lives. Our research is world-class and rated well above or above world class in 11 disciplines.

We invite you to become part of our history.

Celebrating 150 Years of Education

150 years ago the School of Mines was established, based on recommendations of the Ballarat Mining Board in 1869. The original motivation was to fill a shortage of mine managers for the goldfields. Classes began in surveying, mathematics, chemistry – and a decade later they included metallurgy, assaying and geology. As the third oldest education provider in Australia, the Federation University of today has that same purpose.

We are a modern, progressive university providing high-quality vocational and higher education. Our network now extends across Victoria – from Ballarat, Berwick, Gippsland and the Wimmera – to our campus in Brisbane which focuses on education for international students. We also offer our programs through partner providers across Australian capital cities and have overseas partnerships in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Our campuses are not just places of learning but thriving centres which offer art galleries, childcare, health and fitness facilities, student accommodation, events and clubs.
